Hallux Valgus Surgery / Big Toe Deformities Surgery
Although it is possible to get rid of the big toe dislocations and deformity easily with hallux valgus surgery, the disease is neglected until severe pain begins.
Generally, hallux valgus cannot be cured with physical therapy and splints, since the outward angle of the first metacarpal is enlarged and a doctor is consulted when the dislocation progresses advanced. Surgical procedure is the only treatment.
Hallux valgus surgery is performed with a personalized case-based surgical planning, by taking into account the history of the disease and the genetic condition, after X-ray of the foot is taken. Hallux valgus and intermetatarsal angle are directly effective in surgical planning.
When hallux valgus surgery is performed at a young age, bone healing is completed in a shorter time. Advanced age surgeries require wider surgical procedures due to increased deformity, and correction of deformities in other fingers may require additional surgeries.
What is Hallux Valgus?
The deformity that occurs as a result of the big toe appearing protruding from the joint is called hallux valgus.
Hallux means big toe in Latin. Valgus is the anatomical term used to describe the outward deterioration. Hallux valgus, as the word means, describes the orthopedic deformity that occurs in the big toe as a result of the outward angle of the first metacarpal bone. When neglected, deformities up to dislocations occur not only in the 1st finger joint but also in the 2nd finger.
What Causes Hallux Valgus?
- Genetic reasons
- Compression disorders due to foot anatomy
- Sole height or flat feet
- Using the wrong shoes
- Some sport branch
- Dancer’s foot deformities
- Obesity
- Achilles tendon shortness
What is Hallux Valgus Surgery?
Hallux valgus surgery is an orthopedic surgical procedure performed to replace the first metatarsal bone that moves away from the forefoot and to eliminate other tissue disorders caused by hallux valgus deformation.
How is Hallux Valgus Surgery Performed?
Hallux valgus surgery performed under general anesthesia is a kind of bone osteotomy (cutting the bone with the help of a motor) operation. The bone causing the angle is cut from the place determined by the surgeon, it is fixed where it should be with titanium implants, the bunion is removed, thus, the deformity in the finger would be removed.
Hallux valgus surgery can be performed on both feet at the same time. Since problems such as nerve compression as a result of hallux valgus deformity or bunion in the little finger are treated in the same operation, the duration of the operation is different for everyone.
After Hallux Valgus Surgery
Although there are small bone incisions, the pain after hallux valgus surgery is more severe compared to soft tissue surgeries. For this reason, with some anesthetic applications such as ankle block anesthesia, the patient is provided to spend the first day more comfortably and walk with special shoes the next day.
Hallux valgus surgeries, which are performed with new generation surgical approaches and anesthetic solutions, are not as painful as it is thought and after the procedure the patient will reach to a lifelong foot comfort. Normal foot health can be achieved in a maximum of 6 weeks.
