Chest Wall Deformity Repairs / Nuss Technique

The nuss technique, which is generally used in the repair of congenital chest deformities, is applied within the scope of minimal invasive chest surgery.

Thanks to the Nuss and Abramson techniques applied by placing the Lorenz Bar in closed surgery, it is possible to correct the chest wall defects that are sunken in or protruding through small incisions.

While the sunken of the chest wall or protruding deformation may disturb the person aesthetically, health problems such as decreased breathing capacity, compression of the heart and scoliosis may occur due to the narrowing of the rib cage in advanced cases of pectus excavatum.

Whether for cosmetic purposes or for health reasons, closed surgical approaches such as the nuss technique used to repair the chest wall are extremely effective and patient-satisfied procedures.

What are Chest Wall Deformities?

Pigeon chest, known as Shoemaker’s chest and Pectus Excavatum, are chest wall disorders that develop due to genetic reasons or birth trauma.

  • Pigeon Breast / Pectus Carinatum

The protrusion of the upper part of the chest is a chest wall deformation, which we call pectus carinatum, but it is not operated as often as the shoemaker’s chest, since it does not cause any discomfort in terms of health.

  • Shoemaker’s Chest / Pectus Excavatum

Inward sunken of the cartilage structure and chest wall in the middle of the chest is Pectus Excavatum disease, also known as shoemaker’s chest, and can be completely cured with the NUSS technique.

How is the NUSS Technique Done/ How is Shoemaker’s Breast Surgery Performed?

The steel bar (Lorenz Bar), which will support the sunken cartilage tissue, is shaped based on a model made of aluminum material before the surgery.

The operation, performed under general anesthesia, starts with a minimal incision on the right side of the chest into the rib cavity. Without damaging the lungs and heart, another incision is made on the left side of the chest, directly opposite, with the help of a metal guide with a camera on the tip.

The steel guide, which enables the camera to be driven and two mutually incisions are made, is replaced by the rope attached to its end, and the steel bar is fixed under the chest wall by means of the rope, taking the sunken area outward.
