Diaphragm / Diaphragm Surgery

Diaphragm surgery performed within the scope of thoracic surgery consists of closed surgeries used in the treatment of diseases related to the diaphragm muscle.

Open plication surgery is a classical method that has been abandoned for a long time due to blood loss, risk of infection and unnecessary large surgical wound. The current approach in diaphragmatic plication surgeries performed in paralysis, hernia or injuries comprise of minimal invasive thoracic surgery applications and closed surgeries.

What is Diaphragm?

The diaphragm is a muscle in the abdominal cavity and works like a kind of bellows during breathing. However, although the diaphragm muscle, which separates the abdominal and thoracic cavities, consists of a single piece, the right and left diaphragm muscles are autonomous, that is, involuntary muscle groups that work independently of each other.

Which Diaphragm Diseases does Diaphragm Surgery deal with.

Although diaphragmatic muscle disorders are not very common health problems, any problem such as paralysis or tearing that may occur in the diaphragm can cause serious pains during breathing and should be treated urgently.

Diaphragm surgery is used in the following cases:

  • Diaphragm Paralysis
  • Diaphragmatic Hernia
  • Diaphragm Elevation
  • Diaphragm Tearing
  • Trauma based Diaphragmatic Injuries
  • Tumor in the Diaphragm Muscle

What is Diaphragm Surgery?

It is a closed surgical application performed in order to make the diaphragm muscle, which rises from the abdominal cavity to the chest due to paralysis, hernia, cystic formations and injuries in the diaphragm muscle, making it difficult to breathe, fix at where it actually should be.

The surgical technique we call diaphragm plication is performed with the VATS method. Diaphragm plication without opening the abdomen with the video-assisted closed thoracic surgery method allows us to obtain extremely satisfactory results. It is a surgical combination that makes both the surgeon and the patient happy and smile.

How Is Diaphragm Plication Performed?

In the plication surgery performed with the VATS method, the abdominal cavity is entered with small incisions at three points determined according to the impaired position of the diaphragm. Elevated or torn diaphragm muscle due to paralysis, hernia or trauma is repaired by plication, in other words, by folding and sewing, and is stretched where it should be. Formations such as tumors in the diaphragm muscle are easily removed with the same method.

After the diaphragm surgery performed under general anesthesia, it is necessary to stay under observation in the hospital for one night. After such operations performed with minimally invasive thoracic surgery, the recovery process is fast and comfortable.
