Esophagoscopy
Esophagoscopy is used for endoscopic imaging of the esophagus, and biopsy, diagnosis and treatment of the esophagus within the scope of thoracic surgery.
Problems with the esophagus, gastric valve and stomach acid can be felt in the form of some complaints in the lungs and heart. Since the esophagus is located between the lungs, esophagoscopy is included in the field of thoracic surgery.
Complaints such as esophago/oesophageal cancer, foreign body or food leakage into the esophagus, diagnosis of reflux and/or Barrett’s esophagus, varicose and vascular diseases in the esophagus, dysphagia, pain when swallowing are conditions that require esophagusoscopy and are mostly performed in consultation with gastroenterology.
What Does Esophagoscopy Mean?
The esophagus is a Latin-driven term. Esophagoscopy is the name we give to the endoscopic examination and minor surgical treatment of the esophagus for diagnostic and diagnostic purposes.
Endoscopy is a type of camera imaging technology developed to examine internal organs. It is possible to view the esophagus, trachea, stomach and intestines with the illuminated micro-camera systems at the end of the thin cables, and combined with the name of the organ to which it is applied, it takes names such as colonoscopy, thoracoscopy, esophagoscopy.
Types of Esophagoscopy
In order to meet different needs, there are two types of esophagoscopy techniques, flexible esophagoscopy and rigid esophagoscopy:
Flexible Esophagoscopy
Flexible esophagoscopy, as the name suggests, consists of a tube and a camera at the end of flexible material that has great mobility does not cause tissue damage.
Flexibility in endoscopic examination is important for obtaining clearer images. Flexible esophagoscopy provides great advantages in terms of imaging and treatment with its maneuverability.
Rigid Esophagoscopy
Rigid esophagoscopy is also used for the same purposes, the only difference being that it is not flexible. For this reason, although it does not seem to be preferred, in some cases where an inflexible material is required, rigid esophagoscopy technique is used as an alternative method.
What is Esophagoscopy?
Depending on the complaint and for what purpose esophagoscopy is performed, the method of application may be different in each case.
When used for diagnostic purposes, it is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and more flexible esophagoscopy is preferred.
Esophagusoscopy applied under general anesthesia, in cases such as biopsy, cyst surgery, infection treatment, can be applied flexible and/or both methods can be used together.
