What is a herniated disc?

There are discs in the cartilage structure in the lumbar region. These discs are located adjacent to the vertebrae. Thus, by establishing a connection between the vertebrae, they provide the comfort of movement. With the aging and physical wear of the body, ruptures occur in the outer part of the discs. Due to these ruptures, the disc core protrudes outward. A herniated disc occurs due to the displacement of the disc core. The resulting herniated disc affects the nerves and usually causes pain in the legs. For this reason, it would be beneficial for people with chronic leg pain to consult a specialist.

How is Herniated Disc diagnosed?

In case the pain does not go away despite the treatments applied, MRI and tomography tests are performed. According to the results of these tests, the diagnosis of lumbar hernia is obtained.

How Is Herniated Disc Surgery Performed?

Herniated disc operation is performed under general anesthesia. The damaged area is reached through 1-2 cm incisions in the body. Here, the operation is performed using the scope. Since the incision made in the surgery and the instruments used are small, a serious opening does not occur. The hernia structure is cleaned to do not damage the nerves. The resulting gap prepares the ground for the relaxation of the nerves. A significant improvement is observed in the patients shortly after the operation.

Who is Suitable for Herniated Disc Surgery?

Herniated disc surgery is the most suitable method for people who have tried non-surgical treatment methods before the operation and cannot get results (physical therapy, injection, etc.). In cases where foot drop occurs, immediate surgical intervention is required. The surgical method should be applied directly in cauda equina syndrome.

What are the Risks of Herniated Disc Surgery?

The incision made during the operation is extremely small. Therefore, the possibility of infection is low. Recurrence of the hernia is also a rare condition.

What is the process after herniated disc surgery?

Since microsurgery methods are applied in herniated disc surgery, there is no serious damage to the body. Patients who have undergone the operation can go home after a one-day observation period. The patient can stand up and meet the basic needs the day after the operation. It is essential for patients’ health not to do heavy work and not gain weight in the first few months. After ten days of rest, the patient may return the daily life activities.
