Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy, which is used in the diagnosis and treatment of knee joint disorders, is included in the scope of minimally invasive approaches in the field of orthopedic surgery.

Like most of the small incision/closed surgical methods, knee arthroscopy is a closed knee surgery technique that results from the combination of technology developed for imaging the joint with surgery.

What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is an endoscopic closed surgery method used in joint surgeries, including the knee joint. Such operations are performed with video assisted minimal invaziv, that is, small incisions, with the help of endoscpoy.

In Which Situations Is Knee Arthroscopy Performed?

  • In the treatment of deformations in the cartilage tissue due to joint rheumatism
  • In cases of meniscus tear
  • In cruciate ligament injuries
  • In trauma and diseases of the knee joint requiring cartilage tissue transplantation or repair
  • In the elimination of problems related to joint fluid / synovium
  • In minor surgical interventions to relax the muscles and nerves in order to increase the mobilization of the knee joint.

How is Arthroscopy/Closed Knee Surgery Performed?

Arthroscopy surgery, which is performed by entering through small incisions on both sides of the knee joint, is performed under general or local anesthesia.

After the detection of bone, cartilage, soft tissue and fluids forming the knee joint with the help of endoscope, surgical treatment is, with video support, performed in the tissue that causes pain and/or limitation of movement in the joint.

It is possible to perform different knee joint treatments such as cartilage tissue rasping, joint fluid supplementation, meniscus surgery, cruciate ligament surgery, with arthroscopy, also known as closed knee surgery.

After Knee Arthroscopy

Since it is performed closed, the pain after knee arthroscopy surgery is mild and the recovery period is comfortable.

The patient, who is kept under observation for one day or until the evening of the surgery day, is usually discharged on the same day if there is no severe pain. Following the recommendations of the doctor and physical therapist about when and how the patient should step on the leg, depending on the content of the operation, is one of the most important issues after knee arthroscopy.
