Muscular and Peripheral Nervous System Diseases
The most well-known muscle and peripheral nervous system diseases, SMA and Floppy Baby Syndrome, are diagnosed and treated in pediatric neurology.
Any deterioration in the peripheral nervous system, which provides the sensory transmission of the muscles to the central nervous system, adversely affects muscle development, causes formal deformation in muscles and joints, loss of strength and movement disorders.
Muscle and peripheral nervous system diseases, which are caused by the peripheral nervous system being damaged from the mother’s womb, are pediatric neurology diseases that are difficult to treat and shown in the high risk group.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
The peripheral nervous system network that connects the brain and spinal cord with all internal organs, limbs and skin, depending on the central nervous system, is called the peripheral nervous system.
The peripheral nervous system is a network of nerves that surrounds the entire body. Although the central nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord, is surrounded by the skull and spinal bone, the peripheral nervous system is unprotected within the anatomical structure. It is therefore susceptible to mechanical and toxic damage.
What are Muscle and Peripheral Nervous System Diseases in Children?
Muscle and peripheral nervous system diseases in children studied under the pediatric neurology department are different from adult peripheral nervous system diseases.
SMA and Hypotonic Baby (Floppy Baby) disease, which occur mostly due to neurological developmental defects that occur in the womb, are the most well-known cases diagnosed and treated in this field.
SMA
Spinal Muscular Atrophy SMA is a genetically based neuromuscular nervous system disease that occurs after birth and whose course and treatment varies in varying degrees as Type1, Type2, Type3.
It is a disease that causes the muscle system to melt, including all organs, because the nerve connection, which we call the synapse, between the peripheral nervous system and the spinal cord is not realized.
Floppy Baby
Floppy baby syndrome, called a hypotonic baby or a weak baby, is caused by the lack of development of muscle tone.
Due to the poor communication between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, the synapse coming from the brain cannot be transmitted to the muscles or is transmitted too late. Since the muscle does not have the strength to resist, the muscles do not get stronger and the anatomical structure is not formed.
