Rhinoplasty
The nose is, anatomically, the first recognized organ as it is located in the middle of the face. The nose, the organ of breathing and smell, differs from person to person in terms of shapes. Different nose shapes and sizes may sometimes be uncomfortable regarding appearance concerns. Congenital deformities, or deformations caused by falling or injury, can cause a great loss of self-confidence in individuals. Sometimes, they may feel the need to cover their noses with their hands while laughing or talking. This physical appearance discomfort can be eliminated with rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is performed not only for aesthetic concerns but also for solving breathing problems and correcting cartilage and bone curvatures.
With rhinoplasty, the person’s healthy breathing is ensured, while at the same time, the aesthetic appearance of the person’s nose, such as arched, large, long, low or large holes, is reconstructed. In general, rhinoplasty aims to solve health problems while improving the physical appearance of the nose.
Nose surgeries are usually performed with two different surgical methods, open and closed, and should be performed by ear, nose, throat, or plastic surgeons in the hospital environment.
Who may apply for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is applied to people who are uncomfortable with the appearance of their nose or have respiratory problems. And also may be preferred for;
- The nose is large for the face shape
- The nose is small for the face shape
- Arched nose
- Low nose tip
- Disproportionate nostrils
- People with breathing problems
- Deformations caused by falling or impact
What are the Rhinoplasty Methods
Rhinoplasty is performed with two different surgical methods, open and closed.
What is Open Nose Aesthetics?
Open rhinoplasty is a surgical method performed by making a small incision under the nose. In this method, the tip of the nose is opened with a 3-4 mm incision. In this way, the surgeon can see the nose’s bones, cartilage, and muscles and intervene in a wider area. After the surgery, this incision is closed and made invisible. Open rhinoplasty takes longer than closed rhinoplasty. However, it gives the desired shape to the nose and offers more opportunities to the surgeon.
What is Closed Nose Aesthetics?
Closed rhinoplasty is a surgical method performed by cutting the inside of the nose. In this method, an external incision is not made in the nose. Nasal cartilages and bones are reached with a 3-4 cm incision inside the nose. After the operation, this incision is closed with stitches. The advantage of closed rhinoplasty over open rhinoplasty is that the healing process takes a shorter time.
The choice of open or closed method is a method that the surgeon should determine according to the structure of the nose, against the patient’s will.
How Is Rhinoplasty Operation Performed?
Rhinoplasty surgery takes an average of 2-2.5 hours, depending on the operation and its shape. If an operation is performed only for shaping, this period can be shortened. However, if there is a deformity in the nose, the duration of the operation may be longer.
Before the operation, the patient is examined in detail. It is investigated whether diseases such as haemophilia (bleeding disorder) may prevent surgery. The surgeon, performing the operation, examines the nose physically and then transfers the post-operative gains to the patient. With the physical examination, factors such as the structure of the skin, what changes will be made, and the cartilage’s durability are examined in detail. In addition, if there are respiratory problems during the examination, it is detected.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. If no complications are observed after the surgery, it is possible to leave the hospital on the same day.
How Does the Process After Nose Surgery Happen?
Bleeding and swelling may occur in patients after nose surgeries. Things to consider to prevent post-operative bleeding and swelling are listed as follows;
- Lying in a position with the head higher than the chest
- Avoiding strenuous activities
- Blowing the nose
- Consuming fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables to prevent constipation
- brushing teeth softly
- wearing comfortable clothes such as shirts
- Not wearing glasses for at least a month
- Applying sunscreen on the nose
There may also be a temporary swelling of the eyelids after nose surgery. An ice pack should not be placed on the nose in such cases. After the operation, it is recommended that the patient rest for a week for health.
