What is a Stroke?
Problems such as tearing, bleeding, and blockage in the brain or a vessel that goes to the brain cause a person to have a stroke. These problems prevent blood and oxygen from reaching the brain. Cells that cannot meet their oxygen needs begin to extinct rapidly. There are three leading causes of stroke;
Ischemic attack: It is a temporary blockage of blood vessels.
Ischemic Stroke: is the most common stroke. It is a more severe blockage of the vessels leading to the brain. It can cause long-term or permanent damage.
Hemorrhagic Stroke: It is a condition in which blood vessels in the brain rupture and cause bleeding.
What Are the Symptoms of Stroke?
Damage to the brain tissue caused by the blockage of the vessels leading to the brain causes symptoms to appear in some parts of the body. The damaged parts of the brain operate in these areas.
Early intervention is an essential factor in stroke treatment. It would be helpful to know what the symptoms are for early diagnosis. The main symptoms of stroke can be listed as follows;
- numbness in the arms and legs, especially on one side of the body
- Inability to react
- loss of balance
- Speech and perception problems
- Difficulty walking
- Vision problems (blurred vision, double vision, inability to see)
- Sudden mood change
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Severe headache
The key to success in stroke treatment is early diagnosis. For this reason, patients with symptoms need to apply to the nearest health institution. Stroke; can lead to permanent damage to the brain, disability, and death.
What are the Conditions Caused by Stroke?
Some conditions carry risks that increase the likelihood of stroke. These situations can be listed as follows;
- Excessive use of salt
- Trans fat use
- Cholesterol
- Lifestyle with no exercise
- Working in sedentary jobs
- Malnutrition
- Smoking
- Alcohol use
- Genetic factors
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Anemia
- High weight
- Rhythm disorder
All these factors increase the possibility of having a stroke. Many of these factors can be eliminated with regular exercise and a regular diet.
What Tests Are Done to Diagnose Stroke?
Several different tests need to be performed before a diagnosis of stroke. As a result of these tests, a more exact treatment process begins. These tests can be listed as follows;
Blood test: Provides information about general health status.
MRI test: It determines the health status of brain tissues and cells.
CT test: It enables the detection of damage or possible damage to the brain.
Carotid ultrasound gives information about the plaques in the neck and brain.
ECG test: It detects heart diseases.
Cerebral angiography: It gives detailed information about the vessels in the brain and neck region.
Echocardiography: It detects clots in the heart.
How is Stroke Treatment Applied?
It must be remembered that the most crucial issue in stroke cases is time. The damage caused by time will be the main factor determining the dosage in the treatment to be applied. Treatment methods for stroke can be listed as follows;
- Clot-busting drugs
- Mechanical thrombectomy
- Stent insertion
- Surgery
