Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Thoracoabdominal aneurysms are bubbles that form in the aorta. Because it poses a life-threatening risk, they should be removed immediately if diagnosed.

The aorta is the main artery which the heart pumps clean blood throughout the body. Therefore, any problem in the aorta is likely to have serious consequences. Aneurysms are dangerous lesions that occur unexpectedly and also with the possibility of bursting unexpectedly.

Thoracic and abdominal aneurysms of which early detection are not possible most of the time, regular cardiovascular examination is vital for early diagnosis.

What is Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm?

Thoracoabdominal aneurysms, also known as aortic aneurysms, is the term we use to describe bubbles that form along the aorta as it exits the heart and continues into the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

Bubbles that form along the aorta in the thoracic cavity are called thoracic aneurysms, and those that occur in the aorta in the descending part of the abdomen are called abdominal aneurysms. Thoracoabdominal is the diagnosis and treatment branch covering all of the aneurysms that occur in the aorta starting from its exit from the heart.

Methods Used in the Treatment of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm

After the aneurysm is diagnosed, the location of the aneurysm and the condition of the aorta and where it is located determine the treatment method and whether it requires emergency intervention.

In the treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysms, endovascular/intravascular closed surgery (EVAR and TEVAR closed aneurysm surgeries) and classical open aortic surgery are the accepted surgical approaches all over the world.

Rupture, narrowing, enlargement of the aorta are the conditions that increase the probability of bursting of the aneurysm.  In such cases that require urgent intervention, the treatment method is decided according to the age and general health status of the patient

Aortic Aneurysm Surgery

Aneurysm surgery is the protocol of removing the aneurysm from the area where the aortic vessel is enlarged after opening the abdomen or chest, and connecting the artificial vessel and the aorta.

The duration of thoracoabdominal open aortic aneurysm surgery performed with the conventional surgical method may take up to 8 hours. It is a difficult and risky operation compared to other heart surgeries.

After the operation, the patient is followed up in the intensive care unit in order to prevent complications such as possible loss of consciousness or paralysis.  After the completion of the intensive care process, the health status of the person dischargin from the hospital should be followed closely for a while after the necessary controls are made.
