Tracheal Surgery and Tracheal Stents
Tracheal surgery consists of the treatment of conditions such as narrowing, injury, obstruction in the trachea and operations where formations such as tumors are removed.
Obstruction or narrowing of the airway for any reason can lead to processes up to breathlessness and suffocation. Tracheal surgery is the department of thoracic surgery, in which surgeries, including emergency interventions, are performed for the placement of instruments such as airway stents to keep the trachea open.
Trachea is an anatomically handicapped organ. Surgical operation is difficult due to its complicated cartilage structure. Therefore, it is one of the fields that require special expertise in thoracic surgery.
What is Trachea?
The trachea, known as the windpipe, is part of the respiratory system along with the lungs. It transmits the fresh air we breathe through to the bronchi.
The trachea, the trachea, which we use while breathing and exhaling, starts from the larynx and continues to the bronchi from the point where it divides into two to connect to the right and left lungs like a tree roots branching all along.
The part we call the trachea goes from the larynx to the lungs.
What is Trachea Surgery and How is it Performed?
Tracheal surgery is usually performed for shortness of breath, which develops as a side effect of long-term treatments, or for the removal of rare tracheal tumors.
Tracheal stenosis operations are performed as bronchoscopic closed surgical methods or classical tracheal surgery in which the deformed part of the trachea is removed:
Tracheal Resection / Tracheal Surgery
Tracheal resection and/or reconstruction, referred to as tracheal surgery, is a surgical approach in which the narrowed portion of the trachea is removed.
Bronkoskopik Dilatation
It is a bronchoscopic dilatation procedure, which we call non-surgical tracheal expansion treatment, by opening the narrowed trachea using a balloon or tracheal dilator, with the help of a video imaging system developed to examine the tunnel extending from the trachea to the bronchi.
Laser Bronchoscopy
Another way to treat narrowing caused by wounds, infections and/or benign tumors that formed in the inner wall of the trachea is laser bronchoscopy.
Tracheal Stents
Tracheobronchial airway stents are tubes made of polymer, metallic and hybrid materials that are used to keep the airway open. With the closed or open surgical hand, it is possible to keep the trachea open by means of tracheal stents placed at the point where the trachea narrows.
