What is Urethroplasty?
Urethroplasty is an operation performed due to the narrowing of the tubes called the urethra that help to expel the urine. In this operation, it is aimed to restore the functionality of the tubes. The operation of opening or removing the parts of the tube where the tube narrows is called urethroplasty. It is extremely important to consult a specialist doctor before it is too late in cases where urinary congestion is experienced frequently.
How Is Urethroplasty Performed?
An incision is made in the penis, scrotum or perineum, depending on the area where the narrowing is experienced. Here, if the length of the stenosis is less than two centimeters, the stenosis is eliminated by entering the canal with a scopy. The catheter is then attached to the area. After the catheter is placed, the process is followed. the open surgery is preferred in the removal of the stenosis with less than 2 cm width Endoscopic urethroplasty can always offer a permanent solution. In such cases, open surgery is required.
How Long Does Urethroplasty Operation Take?
The operation duration varies according to the location of the area where the contraction is experienced, the length of the contraction and the reason. It takes between two and six hours.
How Long Does It Take to Heal After Urethroplasty?
The type of operation preferred determines the recovery time. Usually, one stays in the hospital for one night after the operation. There is no harm in being discharged later. In cases where a catheter is placed, the patient should be extremely careful. Resting for the first two weeks is important for the operation. At the end of two weeks, the patient can perform non-heavy physical activities. It’s important for the patient to wear comfortable clothes due to the catheter fixed to the leg.
What Should Be Done After Urethroplasty?
Narrowing of the urethra is a recurring problem. For this reason, the post-operative process should be followed closely. These follow-ups are done two to four times a year. In the examinations, the urine flow rate is determined by performing a cystoscopy on the patient. Thus, the postoperative course is observed.
Is Urethroplasty a Successful Operation?
The success rate of open urethroplasty surgeries is higher than endoscopic urethroplasty surgery. The reason for this is the complete removal of the narrow area in open urethroplasty surgery. If the endoscopic operation is unsuccessful, it is not recommended to repeat it. In such cases, open surgery is performed. Eighty percent of patients recover after operations. The effect of recurrent contractions on the patient is not as high as in the first time. The narrowings that occur here are usually not large enough to cause obstruction.
